Great Paintings

Art Is What It Is

An important consideration in fully understanding and appreciating a work of art is the context in which the work was created. I believe the artist/painter's  life experiences outside his/her respective painting studio  and the time and location where its creation took place is vital information to fully appreciate a work of art. Therefore, art that impresses me ...that resonates or appeals to my aesthetic senses is art that arouses sympathy for the creator of the work. In other words, it is art that reflects the artist's  life and his immediate environment.  It is art with content..a human narrative..replete with human pathos that draws me to consider the work. The other stuff such as line, color, shape, etc follows in relevance.

Here, I post a select few painters that attract...that hold me in aesthetic arrest........

Chaïm Soutine is a master. His painted image is magic.....where paint, canvas and heart join forces. I fell in love with this painter on my first encounter/viewing of his work.

James Ensor

The Intrigue 1890 James Ensor

James Ensor is genius. His work is what a reserve, quiet man feels about the world, the society that surrounds him. Upon viewing his work, I too see   my friends and family in paint.  I  see the  masks that we wear to  conceal... to fool. We are voyuer.

Tiziano Vecellio or Titian

The Flaying of Marsyas  1570-1576 Titia

Perhaps the greatest painting ever.  I am in awe.  This amazing creation by Master Tiziano Vecellio never ceases to amaze/ astonish  me. Upon consideration of this great  masterpiece,   without question, my total being is  placed  in complete aesthetic arrest.... far away in an unknown magical place.  I genuflect!
